Jacko regrets enjoying a birthday treat!

Being part of the family Jacko the retriever decided it was only right to join in an important birthday celebration....by scoffing 14 generous slices of delicious chocolate fudge cake, covered in cling film.
Unfortunately for Jacko, theobromine in chocolate is toxic to dogs and this amount of cake contained enough to make him very ill. Thankfully Jacko's owners were aware of the dangers and contacted the surgery straight away.
As it was only a short time since he had indulged himself Vet Laura and our Veterinary Nurses were able to prevent any ill effects by making him vomit most of the cake back up. After some medicine to prevent absorption of any remaining toxins, Jacko was soon able to go home to a celebration lacking one of the essential parts of any birthday party.
As you can see Jacko is none the worse for wear....other than by being in the dog house.
As Christmas approaches it is worth being aware of other seasonal goodies to keep away from greedy dogs
DRIED FRUIT - raisins, sultanas and currants contained in Christmas cakes, puddings and mince pies. Some dogs can even be made ill by eating fresh grapes
MISTLETOE
XYLOTOL- an artificial sweetener found in some low calorie chocolate and chewing gum
NUTS - particularly peanuts and macadamias
As for cats its is usually things to be played with rather than food stuffs which cause the problem - tinsel, string and fancy tape for tying parcels can all be swallowed and cause bowel obstructions.
