Prescriptions and Repeat Prescriptions
We are asked many times to clarify the rules that govern how we are allowed to authorise requests for repeat prescription medicines. We are bound by strict medicine guidelines and this is how the process works:
- Vet sees and checks your pet and prescribes a medicine.
- If this treatment is ongoing and the Vet is happy that the condition is stable, he/she adds to the notes that a further check up will be needed after a maximum of 3MONTHS –sooner in some cases.
- Medicines are dispensed in quantities sufficient for 1 month or as near as is practical [Flea and Worm products can be dispensed for up to 12 months].
- Before you run out of medication, you ring the surgery to request a repeat prescription.
- The nurse or receptionist checks the notes and either:
- A] Organises the medicines for a further month and advises you when you can collect, or
- B] Advises you that a check up is now due and you can book an appointment, or
- C] Refers to the Vet where there is any doubt or exceptional circumstances.
For a Quicker more efficient service and a fast collection:
1] Ring outside consulting times with your request.
2] Pay by credit/debit card over the phone at the same time.
3] Collect your medication outside of consulting times.
Follow these three small steps to ensure virtually no waiting time when you collect your prescription!!!
POM Prescriptions are also available from this practice
Your veterinary surgeon may supply or prescribe Prescription Only Medicines (POM's) for animals under his or her care if this is appropriate (a prescription may not be appropriate if the medicine is for an in-patient or if immediate treatment is necessary).
You may obtain POM's from your veterinary surgeon (you can ask for a price quote for your medicines) or you may ask for a prescription and obtain the medicines from a pharmacy or another veterinary surgeon. You will be informed of all likely charges relating to veterinary advice prescriptions and supply of POM's supplied by your veterinary surgeon. You will be informed of the cost of re-examination for a repeat prescription. Normally your pet will need to be examined within 3 months for most prescription drugs (or within 1 year for wormers and flea treatment) but this can vary with individual circumstances.
